Since the last post life has been busy. Obviously I have been trying to do as much as possible these last few weeks as we near the end of this unforgettable experience.
Major News: I AM NOW 21
| Ben's Famous Apple Pie |
On the day before my actual birthday, Thursday the 7th, my friends put together an awesome American dinner of burgers, fries, and apple pie. Let’s just say that I ate my weight in delicious food and required a brief ‘lay on the floor’ session before the actual celebrating could begin. In other words, I felt like spewing even before I got into any of the alcohol!
| Me, Judy...... wait, who is that? |
Obviously, the drinking eventually happened and continued at The Purple Turtle (a Karaoke Bar), Dubliners (a Long St. staple), and Fez (a really cool club with acrobats, cross-dressers on stilts, and fire dancers).
I made it safely back home and safely into my 22nd year of life. History in the making.
The following morning… realistically it was probably the afternoon already, Ben, Taylor, Judy, Grace, and I took a rental car to the South African wine country just north of Cape Town.
With initial plans to go for a hike in the mountains, we settled for a wine tasting in one of the most beautiful places in the world and an afternoon of walking around Stellenbosch. The town is really cutesy and full of tourist shops, unique restaurants, and Afrikaners.
After returning back to Cape Town, we got back in the car and drove north again... this time farther west to the Kloof Estate. Every year thousands of South Africans flock to this wine estate for one of the largest music festivals in the country. The Rockin' the Daisies Festival!
There were five venues set up around the farm. There was a techno/rave dome, the main stage (rock/folk), the New Beats Barn (alternative/folk/indie), the comedy tent, and another venue that I never found. My favorite was the New Beats Barn because they had the most lively music and it was the smallest venue which made it more fun. The main stage also was a lot of fun and featured the bigger bands from South Africa. I really liked the City Bowl Mizers.
After staying up really late listening to Haezer in the techno dome we wentback to our car where five of us slept in the most cramped conditions EVER! Ben and I had the front seats and Taylor, Judy, and Meira shared the back seat in a Tata (hardly bigger than a Smartcar... or so it felt).
The following we spent most of the day at the main stage because it was so nice out and we were able to just sit in the sun and listen to music... perrrfect. We left in the afternoon for Cape Town because there was no way we were sleeping in the car again and staying for the last day. It was that rough of a night. Still, it was such an awesome birthday weekend, full of music, wine, and TWEAKING!
